Frequently Asked Questions

(or perhaps those that should be)

Where can I learn more about the Puritans?

The book I always recommend is Worldly Saints: the Puritans as They Really Were by Leland Ryken, published by Zondervan. Not only is it an excellent introduction to the Puritans, it has a superb bibliography. You can order it from Amazon.com.

The best introduction to Puritan theology is J.I. Packer's A Quest for Godliness, The Puritan View of the Christian Life, published by Crossway Books. It is also available from Amazon.com.

Peter Lewis's short but useful introduction, The Genius of Puritanism, is very helpful on the distintives of the Puritans. He answers the question, "What did the Puritans believe?" Order a copy from Amazon.com.

(N.B.: You will note that these are books. Learning from the Puritans requires study.)

I am often asked to recommend a general biography of the Puritans. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any such animal. I would hope that either some enterprising author might rise to the occasion, or else eventually the Web will fulfill this need.
