Von dem christlichen Abschied dieser Welt

O Welt, ich muß dich lassen,
Ich fahr dahin mein Straßen
Ins ewig Vaterland;
Mein Geist will ich aufgeben,
Darzu mein Leib und Leben
Setzen gnädig in Gottes Hand.

 

Mein Zeit ist nun vollendet,
Der Tod das Leben schändet,
Sterben ist mein Gewinn:
Kein Bleiben ist auf Erden,
Das Ewig muß mir werden,
Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin. [...]

 

Ich bin ein unnütz Knechte,
Mein Tun ist viel zu schlechte,
Dan daß ich ihm bezahl
Darmit das ewig Leben:
Umsonst will er mirs geben
Und nicht nach meim Verdienst und Wahl. [...]

 

Damit fahr ich von hinnen:
O Welt, tu dich besinnen,
Wann du mußt auch hernach;
Tu dich zu Gott bekehren
Und von ihm Gnad begehren,
Im Glauben sei du auch nicht schwach. [...]

 

Das schenk ich dir am Ende.
Ade! Zu Gott ich wende,
Zu ihm steht auch mein Be'gehr;
Hüt dich vor Pein und Schmerzen,
Nimm mein Abschied zu Herzen,
Meins Bleibens ist jetzt hie nicht mehr.

 

 

A Christian Farewell to the World

O world, I have to leave you, I am going on my way to the eternal home. I will give up my spirit, and lay my body and my life humbly in the hand of God.

My time is completed, death makes a mock of life, dying is my profit: there is no permanency on earth, I must obtain eternal life; I depart in peace and joy.

I am an unprofitable servant, my deeds are much too lowly for me to earn eternal life from Him with them; He gives it me for nothing and not according to my deserts and choice.

And so I depart from here: O World, consider, for in time you must do so too. Turn to God and ask for grace from Him and do not be weak in faith.

That is my last gift to you. Farewell, I turn towards God, my desire is fixed on Him; protect yourself from pain and sorrow, take my farewell to heart, my habitation is no longer here.
